Eine sehr tolle und aufregende Famulatur. Weitere Info´s siehe unten:

Hospital: I was working at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).It is a public hosptial, which is very close to Mona Campus. You walk about 2-3 minutes from the Aqueduct Flats to the main enterance of the hospital.
Supervision: During my four week programme I basically worked at Gereral Surgery and Vascular Surgery. My supervisor and consultant was Dr. Brown on the one hand, and Dr. Allie Martin on the other hand. Both of them were very friendly and nice to me.
Work: Usually working started at 8 o´clock (Monday and Thursday) or at 7 o´clock (Thuesday, Wednesday, Friday) with ward rounds. You discuss different issues, medication und the plan for patients. It is very similar to german rounds. On Tuesday there were a lot of minor operations, on Wednesday we had our mayor operation day. All students stay in the operation theatre for the whole day. If you want you able to assist and help the surgens. Unfortunately there are always a lot other (jamaican)medical students so that it is not always possible to assist. Actually there are also rounds at 6:00 pm every day, but I never stayed that long in the hospital. In general I felt very free to leave the hospital whenever I wanted to do so. If there was nothing to do for me, I was able to leave around 1:00 pm. On Thuesday afternoon we had clinics. That means that we had to clerk new patients, taking a history and doing a complete examination. It was always discussed with the consultans afterwards, which was very interesting because they explain a lot.
In summary I really enjoyed working at UHWI. All of the doctors were very nice and helpful. It was a great experience and I would always do it again!! I didn´t like the fact that there were always a lot of other medical students around. Because of that you are sometimes not able to do something on your own.

I really enjoyed my working experience in a foreign country as well as getting to know a new culture. Jamaica has lots of nice place to visit and lots of activities you can do there.
