I am a student from Paraguay and did a 3-week Famulatur in this department. It was excellent in every way and I fully recommend it. You get a very good idea of how broad and complex Anesthesia actually is. The entire team is very open and eager to teach. You get to learn from the Chefarzt, Oberärzte, Assistenzärzte which means that you get to interact with everyone. They all have admirable patience, I am not fluent in German and this never stopped them from trying to teach me anything. They let you participate in what you feel comfortable and capable of doing. You rotate through Central OP, where the big surgeries are and you can participate in the induction, maintenance and post op. This includes handling oxygen masks, intubation, larynx masks, i.v. lines, ekg, monitoring vital signs, drug preparations, helping with nerve blocks and spinal anesthesia, observing central lines and arterial catheters, etc. When there are longer surgeries it is a great opportunity for questions and doubts, personally I took this time to make questions about Pharmacology because of a personal interest. You are also given a workbook that has a lot of vital information. The entire OP staff and nurses were very welcoming and took their time to show me how everything works.
Then there is the ENT unit where there are many short surgeries, which is good to practice intubation. There is also the Intensive Care Unit and Pain Clinic where you can also rotate and see new things.
A highlight of the Famulatur was that there are always workshops going on around the hospital which we can participate in. I took part in a Reanimation workshop and one on Post Operative Delirium in elderly patients, both of which were excellent and a bonus to the whole experience.
I think this Famulatur contributed immensely to my education and recommend it to anyone who wants to have a "hands on" opportunity to get a good idea of this specialty.
